Car Battery Care in Storage: Why Your Car Should Be on Charge

You put your car away in October, and in April the starter barely turns. It is the classic after every winter. A flat battery seems like a small problem, but a battery left deeply discharged for months often never fully recovers.

Why does a battery drain when the car is parked?

A modern car never fully sleeps. The alarm, keyless entry, telematics and control unit memory draw a small current all the time. On top of that, every battery loses charge on its own. Over weeks of standing still, it adds up fast.

The real problem is what happens next. A lead-acid battery left discharged forms sulphate crystals on its plates. They take away capacity that does not come back. Cold makes it worse. The result: a shorter battery life, starting problems and sometimes electronic fault messages.

Trickle charger or disconnect the battery?

Disconnecting stops the drain, but on many modern cars you lose settings, windows and systems need relearning, and the battery still slowly self-discharges. A smart trickle charger (battery maintainer) is the better choice. It keeps the battery topped up, switches automatically between charging and maintaining, and prevents sulphation.

  • Choose a smart charger that suits your battery type (lead-acid, AGM or lithium)
  • Where possible, use the charging points in the engine bay that the manufacturer specifies
  • Leave the charger connected for the whole storage period
  • Electric or hybrid? The 12V battery still needs support, and for the main battery many manufacturers advise a charge level somewhere around the middle

On charge as standard

In our climate-controlled storage in Utrecht every car is on charge and under a cover as standard. No surcharge, no box to tick. It is simply part of it. You collect your car with a healthy battery.

Storage is also secured 24/7 and climate controlled. It starts at €250 per month for Basic and €350 for Advanced (ex VAT), with lower rates when paid annually. For winter only, there is a separate winter package.

FAQ

How long can a car stand without a charger?

It varies a lot by car and battery. Modern cars with lots of electronics can have problems within a few weeks. If your car will stand for more than a couple of weeks, connect it.

Is idling the engine enough?

No. Short idling barely charges the battery and causes condensation in the exhaust and engine. A charger is better for both.
